Visiting Marazion for its sea life

Marazion isn’t just about tides and iconic views. The waters of Mount’s Bay are home to dolphins, seals, basking sharks, and more. If you’re lucky—and visiting at the right time—you might catch a glimpse of some of Cornwall’s most exciting marine life.

Plan Your Visit

For the best chances, visit between May and August for dolphins and basking sharks, or October to December for seal spotting. These months offer the highest likelihood of sightings due to favourable sea temperatures and feeding conditions. Stay a few days, check the local places to stay, and keep your camera ready.

What You Might See

  • Dolphins: Common and bottlenose dolphins are most often seen from May to September. Look out for them riding the surf or swimming near boats in calm weather.
  • Seals: Spotted near rocks or sandbars, with increased visibility from October to December when they often haul out to rest.
  • Basking Sharks: These gentle plankton feeders appear mostly in late May through July, following seasonal plankton blooms.

When and Where to Watch

Wildlife tends to appear more often during calm seas and good light—early mornings and late afternoons are best. Try viewing from Marazion Beach or take a wildlife boat trip from nearby harbours.
