Marazion dog Beach Guide
Marazion is one of Cornwall’s most welcoming destinations for dog owners, offering wide sandy shores with spectacular views across to the iconic St. Michael’s Mount. The beach here is a favourite for dog walkers, thanks to its open space, gentle waves, and easy access to the South West Coast Path. Whether you’re looking for a morning stroll, a run along the tide line, or simply a spot to relax while your four-legged friend explores, Marazion’s dog-friendly stretch provides the perfect setting. With its blend of natural beauty and relaxed seaside atmosphere, it’s no surprise Marazion has become a go-to destination for those seeking the best dog beaches in Cornwall.
Marazion’s main beach with the dotted Orange paws is subject to a seasonal dog walking ban from 1st of July to the 31st of August every year, from 10AM til 6PM. St. Michael’s Mount itself does not allow dogs, but pups are welcome on the causeway. To the right is Gwelva Beach or (Marazion East), which is far more accommodating, letting pets on at all times of day throughout the year. On the far left (West) with green paws, is Long Rock Beach, which is available all year round, and following the free beach will take you into the town of Penzance.
Palm oil & the dangers it poses to your pet
Palm oil, a wax-like substance used in many foods and cosmetics, can occasionally wash up on UK beaches in the form of white, yellow, or orange lumps resembling a melting snowball or strangely coloured smooth rock. These deposits often originate from shipping activities such as tank cleaning or accidental spillages and are sometimes contaminated with pollutants or hazardous materials. While palm oil is not inherently toxic, ingestion by dogs can cause significant health problems. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, and lethargy; in more serious cases, pancreatitis, intestinal blockages, organ damage, or even death can occur.
Dogs are often drawn to the unusual smell of palm oil, which may have a faint diesel-like odour, and may attempt to eat it if encountered. The substance has been found on beaches in many coastal regions, including Cornwall, particularly after stormy weather. Dog walkers are advised to remain vigilant, keeping pets on leads where palm oil is suspected, and to report any sightings to local authorities such as the coastguard or local council. If ingestion occurs, veterinary advice should be sought immediately.
