Looking for an easy coastal walk with stunning views, wildlife and family‑friendly facilities? The Marazion to Penzance section of the South West Coast Path is a flat, surfaced route that hugs the shoreline of Mount’s Bay. It’s ideal for walkers of all ages, cyclists and even those using wheelchairs or pushchairs. Here’s how to enjoy this scenic stroll.

Route Overview

  • Distance – About 2 miles (3 km) one way. Allow 1–2 hours at a leisurely pace.

  • Terrain – Mostly level with a mix of shingle path and wide concrete promenade It’s virtually level along the sea wall and suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

  • Start & finish – Begin at Marazion Beach. Park at the long‑stay car park in Folly Fields, which has overflow parking in summer and nearby public toilets and play area. Follow the coast west towards Penzance; you can return on foot or catch a bus back.

What You’ll See

St Michael’s Mount views – Throughout the walk you’ll enjoy uninterrupted vistas of the Mount rising above Mount’s Bay. It’s a great spot for photos at different tides.

Marsh & wildlife – Just outside Marazion the path skirts a marsh rich with birdlife. In autumn, watch for starling murmurations as flocks swoop over the reeds. Bring binoculars—herons, egrets and even bitterns might be spotted.

Long Rock Beach – About a mile along, the sand turns to Long Rock Beach, which is dog‑friendly all year. Let your four‑legged friends run free while you enjoy the view. Keep an eye on the bay: dolphins, seals and basking sharks are occasionally seen offshore.

Penzance Harbour – As the beach disappears near Penzance, the path runs alongside the railway line. When you reach the harbour, you can explore Penzance’s shops and cafés or continue along the promenade to Newlyn.

Accessibility & Dog Friendliness

  • Wheelchairs & buggies – The route’s level surface and lack of road crossings make it ideal for wheelchairs and pushchairs. If you have mobility issues, you can start from the Marazion car park where the path becomes concrete and wider.

  • Dogs – Dogs are welcome on this walk. Long Rock Beach is fully dog‑friendly, and the path itself is a great dog‑walking route. Please keep dogs under control near wildlife areas and clean up after them. For more dog‑friendly spots, see our dog‑walking guide.

Tips & Logistics

  • Footwear – The first section is shingle and can be uneven, so wear sturdy shoes. During low tide you can choose to walk along the sandy beach.

  • Facilities – Toilets and a children’s play area are available near Folly Fields car park. There are cafés and restaurants at Marazion and Long Rock for refreshments.

  • Return journey – If you prefer not to walk back, frequent buses run between Penzance and Marazion. Check timetables at the bus station next to Penzance train station.

  • Combine with other activities – Use our tide‑tracker to time a visit to St Michael’s Mount before or after your walk, and consult our water‑guide for current water quality.
